Staying on top of documentation, billing and compliance requirements is an ongoing challenge as our healthcare system evolves. This course will address updates across major payers. Key elements of a PT/OT evaluation, progress reporting, and optimal billing and documentation, as well as compliance hot buttons for documentation.

Target Audience

The intended audience includes occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and therapy students. This series is open to Mayo Clinic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation employees only.

Dr. Lynn Steffes is President/Consultant of Steffes & Associates, a rehabilitation consulting service based in Wisconsin. She provides consulting services to rehab providers nationwide.  She has enabled providers to achieve optimum success in the delivery of high quality, cost-effective care to their patients/clients by offering assistance with

  • Optimal reimbursement and documentation strategies
  • Lobbying and advocacy for therapy services
  • Negotiating managed care contracts and payer relations
  • Marketing and program development
  • Customer Service initiatives and patient alumni programs
  • Training and staff development in the referral and payer relations process

Dr. Steffes is a 1981 graduate of Northwestern University and received her DPT through Evidence in Motion in 2009. She was Network Administrator for over a decade for a group of 60+ private practice clinics where her primary responsibilities include marketing, payer and provider relations and contract management. 

Dr. Steffes is active in her profession as a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and the Private Practice Section of APTA, and the Wisconsin Chapter of APTA, serving as the Chapter’s Payment Specialist on the Medicaid, Workers Compensation, Medicare, and Committees.  She has also served on the Private Practice Section Board of Directors where she was the 2007 recipient of the Dicus Award for Service to the profession.

She has worked with multiple health systems, countless private practice providers as well as the National Easter Seals Organization to develop a national training program in billing and documentation and marketing rehabilitation.

In addition to her work as a consultant, Dr. Steffes is an accomplished teacher, speaker and author.  She has worked as adjunct faculty member in the physical therapy program at Marquette University, the Universities of Wisconsin, Madison & Lacrosse, as well as Northwestern University. She has been active in teaching documentation and payment, professional referral relations, case management, and peer review.  She has also addressed private practices, hospital systems, professional associations, and therapy networks in twenty-four states regarding the professional referral relations process.

Dr. Steffes co-authored the APTA Private Practice Section How to Start a Private Practice Manual, Refresh- A Guide to Health Aging and the Lifestyle Medicine Certification series for MedBridge.
