Palliative Care KSA (Optional, additional fee to attend, in-person only)

November 14, 2024 - Huntington Beach, California

The new Palliative Care ABFM-developed KSA activity focuses on communication strategies, shared decision making, and ethical considerations in palliative care. As well as general principals of pain management, legal regulatory, culture and psychological aspects of palliative care. Managing common palliative care syndromes and recognizing and managing palliative care emergencies.  Register for the KSA here. 

This 4-hour workshop will use the American Board of Family Medicine Palliative Care knowledge self-assessment(KSA) module to review palliative care topics in a quiz/answer/discussion format.  Participants that are certified by the American Board of Family Medicine will receive credit for completion of the ABFM KSA. The KSA will be completed by group participation and discussion to allow for learning from each other.  Additionally, a content expert will provide clarification and additional content. The workshop is not restricted to physicians certified by The American Board of Family Medicine only.  Clinicians certified by other organizations will benefit from the same learning opportunities.

Target Audience

Family practitioners, internists, general practitioners, advanced nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review current updates in Alzheimer's dementia care, including the evidence behind current treatment options
  • Describe the importance of a functional assessment in older adults and practical strategies to optimize exercise
  • Develop a practical approach to deprescribing medications in the long term care setting and beyond
  • Review updates in diabetes management in older adults
  • Manage chronic pain in older adults including safe practice strategies with opioid and buprenorphine use
