This comprehensive curriculum provides nurses with essential knowledge on the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of cancers across various disease sites, including head and neck, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, breast, central nervous system, lung, lymphoma, gynecologic, pediatric, and sarcoma cancers. The content emphasizes the presenting symptoms, diagnostic workup, and treatment modalities for each cancer type, with a particular focus on radiation therapy. Nurses will also gain expertise in recognizing and managing the side effects of radiation therapy.

This course satisfies the Florida Board of Medicines requirement for 2 credits in Medical Errors for each biennial renewal. As stated by the Florida Board of Medicine, this course relates to the prevention of medical and medication errors which includes: a study of root cause analysis, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety. The course includes information relating to the five most misdiagnosed conditions during the previous biennium, as determined by the Board. Learners will explore approaches to prevent medical and medication errors that are system-based and human performance-based.

Mayo Clinic’s Hospital Medicine Boot Camp for NPPAs is a two-day course designed for the novice learner, ideally within the first year of their hospital-based NPPA position. This course is meant to be fun and full of practical information taught by faculty that use current guidelines and share tidbits of experience to help successfully care for acutely ill hospitalized patients. It is filled with a variety of commonly encountered hospital scenarios followed by interactive and informal discussion. Open dialog is encouraged. Participants should feel free to wear scrubs and comfortable shoes, bring a stethoscope, and reference/clinical materials used in daily practice. Despite being called boot camp there are no physical fitness elements to the course.
