This activity shares Mayo Clinic experiences, expertise, and our unique multidisciplinary approach to delivering the most individualized care for every patient. This comprehensive course provides healthcare professionals with an in-depth understanding of the benefits and challenges of using donation after cardiac death (DCD) grafts in the field of liver transplantation. Participants explore the intricate interplay between hepatology, transplant surgery, procurement, and advanced endoscopy. Attendees gain expertise in the procurement of DCD livers, financial challenges as they relate to this organ pool, and posttransplant complications of recipients of DCD liver transplant. This course combines didactic lectures, hands-on workshops, and case discussions to ensure participants develop a well-rounded understanding of this rapidly expanding donor pool.

Target Audience

This course is intended for members of the hepatology community and will be of interest to hepatologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, internists, primary care physicians and other specialists who participate in the care of patients with hepatology disorders and liver transplants.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Formulate surgical techniques associated with liver transplantation.
  • Integrate effective collaboration among various healthcare professionals involved in liver transplantation.
  • Recognize common posttransplant complications.
  • Analyze ethical dilemmas related to organ transplantation within the regulatory framework.
  • Apply evidence-based strategies in the diagnostic workup of patients with suspected cholangiopathy.
