DESCRIPTION:
The Mayo Clinic Audiology externs each present on work they have done this year. Two presentations focus on audiology diagnostic testing, one on tinnitus, and one on hearing aids.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize changes to smooth pursuit performance after an individual sustains a concussion.
  • Describe the relationships between nutrient intake levels and a normal-hearing young adult's experience with chronic tinnitus.
  • Describe the level of impact high frequencies have on hearing performance for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.
  • Describe the default volume control differences across three hearing aid manufacturers and be able to apply this to clinical considerations of hearing aids.

PRESENTER BIOS

Christopher Bechtel attended Northern Illinois University and is completing his externship with Mayo Clinic in Arizona. He is primarily interested in vestibular testing and helping people who are experiencing balance disturbances or dizziness. He has a particular interest in helping individuals who are experiencing vestibular symptoms after they have sustained a concussion or traumatic brain injury. He also enjoys working with individuals with hearing loss, and in particular patients who are non-native English speakers or who have no English language proficiency.

Sarah Kingsbury, M.A., is a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) candidate from the University of Iowa who is completing her 4th year clinical externship at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She was Dr. Ishan Bhatt's Research Assistant in the Audiogenomics Lab for two years and worked with him on his NIH R21 project investigating genetic contributors to tinnitus. Currently, she is contributing to the Aerospace and Vestibular Medicine Research Lab at Mayo Clinic. She is a National NSSLHA and SAA member and is looking forward to being a cochlear implant audiologist as well as a research collaborator in the future. Outside of the clinic, she is a PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and enjoys working with young horseback riders.

Amanda Miller is in the process of completing her Doctorate of Audiology degree from Arizona State University and is currently working as an extern at Mayo Clinic. During her time at school, she has worked as a research assistant for Dr. Brittan Barker’s Aural Rehabilitation Lab to analyze story comprehension in adults with and without hearing loss, and for Dr. Andrea Pittman’s Pediatric Amplification Research Lab to analyze the cognitive organization effects of hearing loss in adolescents. Currently, she is working with Dr. Jennifer Gonzalez at Mayo Clinic to study the effects of high frequency information on speech understanding, which she will presenting about today. Her experience with these supervisors has cultivated her desire to conduct further research in her career, in addition to clinical practice. Outside of the clinic, Amanda enjoys playing the piano, sewing, and western swing dancing.

Erica Eng completed her Au.D. at the University of Texas at Austin and her undergraduate degree at the University of Washington. At the conclusion of her externship, she is looking forward to working in vestibular diagnostics, amplification services, and diagnostic audiometric evaluations. Erica is originally from Washington state and enjoys golfing, going to Universal Studios with her coworkers, and being sunburnt by the Florida sun regularly.
